The University of Oulu offers both degree programs and continuing education in the field of building health.
In the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering at the University of Oulu, students can specialize in Healthy Buildings. Currently, no other university in Finland offers an M.Sc. degree in this field.
The degree equips graduates with the skills to work as experts in challenging design, research, and regulatory roles, while fostering continuous learning in the ever-evolving field of construction regulations and indoor environmental quality standards. The degree provides an excellent foundation for further studies and an international career.
Majority of the courses are offered in Finnish, except for the following courses offered in English:
Building physics (5 ECTS)
Advanced topic on building physics (5 ECTS)
Healthy buildings project work (5 ECTS)
Healthy buildings, varying content (5 ECTS)

The Indoor Environmental Engineering study option is offered within the international Master’s Programme in Environmental Engineering at the University of Oulu. It is the first study option of its kind in Finland and is among the first available in Europe.
The study option addresses pressing global challenges at the intersection of energy efficiency, climate change, public health, and the built environment. Students examine how healthy, comfortable, and sustainable indoor environments can be achieved while balancing ventilation performance, energy use, and environmental impact. The studies also introduce modern approaches, including smart building technologies, sensor-based monitoring, and data-driven decision-making.
Graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of indoor environmental processes and develop the ability to design, assess, investigate, and manage healthy and sustainable indoor environments. The study option prepares students for expert roles in building design, consultancy, research, regulation, and policy. It also provides a strong foundation for further studies and an international career focused on improving indoor environments in both developed and resource-constrained settings.
All courses in the study option are offered in English. Link to the study guide with course descriptions: https://www.oulu.fi/en/apply/masters-environmental-engineering
This module provides students with an in-depth understanding of indoor air pollutants, building physics, and the health impacts of the indoor environment. It offers a diverse combination of theoretical and practical knowledge on research methods for indoor air quality, common structural solutions from different eras, building condition surveys, as well as legislation and guidelines. The instruction is mainly conducted in Finnish.
